At its best, Saturday Night Live reflects the current mood of the nation in an overblown, "wink, nudge" sort of way that allows us to laugh at ourselves. But when faced with something like the Newtown shootings that just doesn't have a funny side, the program showed it was capable of genuine pathos and sensitivity, enlisting the New York Children's Chorus to sing "Silent Night" in place of its usual hijinks. Saturday Night Live is probably the worst place to turn to for comfort or solace, but the show must go on, as they say, and they did it with a very understated, pretty and appropriate tribute ...
